The Netherlands has a long history as a cheese-making country, where cheese was a regular part of the local menu since ancient times. In the Middle Ages, cheese grew in importance as an export product, which in turn gave Dutch people the nickname of “cheese-heads”. Cheese and the Netherlands are almost synonymous.
In 1946, Piet van der Sterre founded his cheese store in the old center of Bodegraven. He built up a chain of specialist cheese shops, where cheeses were sold under his own brand name of Van der Sterre.
